College NIL Policies by State

The NCAA has rolled out its interim NIL policy for student-athletes, and most states have additional policies that govern what student-athletes can and can not do regarding college NIL. Currently, just under 40 states have additional oversight of the NCAA’s interim policy. Below are some key highlights and a comprehensive list of each state and its NIL policies.

Highlights:

  • In Illinois (IL) all NIL earnings have to be reported by the school to the state.

  • In Texas (TX) student-athletes can not use or monetize content while wearing a school’s logo or mark or use content, at practice, during a game or contest, or traveling to or from a game.

  • In Tennessee (TN) schools can lend oversight to which NIL vendors a student-athlete can work with.
